Give every AI employee an identity, or keep it away from your program

By Shrikar Nag, Co-Founder & CEO, Tymeline · · 5 min read

In short

A chat session starts from zero and answers to nobody. A colleague has a name, a job, a boundary and a history. If an AI is going to do work on a program, it needs to be the second kind, and the test is simple: can your security team see exactly what it did, and switch it off in one command?

The difference between chatting and working

A general model in a chat window is a remarkable thing, and it is not a colleague. It has no identity in your systems, no scope, no memory of last week, and no record of what it told you. When it is wrong, there is nothing to audit. That is fine for drafting an email. It is not fine for anything that touches a tape-out date.

What I wanted, when we designed Tymeline's AI Employees, was the thing a CISO would accept without a special meeting: a named service identity in the customer's identity provider, scoped credentials with least privilege, a program it belongs to, a named human it reports to, and a signed receipt for every consequential action, exportable to the tools security already uses.

Identity is what makes the record mean something

This is why identity sits underneath everything we built. Tymeline ID gives every stakeholder on the platform a unique identity: every person, every AI Employee, every vendor, every tool. Every action, human or AI, is mapped to the identity that took it and stacked on the one before, signed, encrypted, and readable only by the source that created it. A record like that is not a log. It is the thing that lets you trust an AI with the next action, because you can see exactly what it did with the last one.

The two questions to ask any vendor

If a vendor says their AI will act on your program, ask two things. Can my security team see, for any action, who approved it and on what evidence? And can we stop it in one command and keep the history? If the answers are not simply yes, the AI is a chat window with ambitions, and it should stay away from anything with a date on it.
