AI Employees, agents and copilots in semiconductor engineering

In short

A copilot assists one person inside one tool. An AI agent carries out a task, usually inside one vendor's tools. An AI Employee is a named member of a program: it has an identity in your identity provider, a scope it cannot exceed, human approvers for anything consequential, and a signed record of everything it did.

What is a copilot?

An assistant that works with one engineer in one tool, such as code completion in an editor. It speeds up that person's work. It has no memory of the program and no responsibility for a date.

What is an AI agent?

Software that carries out a task with some autonomy. EDA vendors now ship agents that do engineering work inside their own tools. They are useful, and they stop at the edge of that vendor's tools: they do not know what the foundry said, or that firmware is behind.

What is an AI Employee?

A named teammate in a program rather than a tool. Five things define it:

  • Verified identity: enrolled in your identity provider as a named identity, reviewed like a person.
  • Scoped authority: bounded by program and by kind of action.
  • Human in the loop: named approvers, hard stops, and a one-command suspend.
  • Signed receipts: every consequential action leaves a tamper-evident record of intent, sources, reasoning and approver.
  • Persistence: it has been in the program since kickoff, where a chat session starts from zero.

Why does the difference matter?

Governance. An agent that inherits the access of whoever deployed it cannot be audited or bounded. A security team can approve an AI Employee because they can see who it is, what it can touch, who approved what it did, and how to stop it.

And accountability for the date. Copilots and agents optimise a task. Something has to hold all of them, and the people, to the program's date.

Can a general AI model run a chip program?

Not on its own. A general model has never seen a chip get made: bring-up logs, re-spin post-mortems and which vendor gate always slips are not on the internet. What it lacks is not intelligence but your program's own record. Tymeline keeps the model swappable and the record in your tenant.
