AI agents for semiconductor program management: what they can run, and what they must not

Tymeline · · 4 min read

In short

On a semiconductor program, AI agents can take over the work between the tools: holding each commitment against its evidence, chasing the owner of a slip, re-sequencing a sprint, re-planning a dependent team when a date moves, and writing the receipt. They do not approve a tape-out gate, sign off a customer qualification or reassign people on their own. The useful test of any agent is whether it acts before the date moves, inside a boundary the company set, with a record of what it did.

The work an agent can take today

Most of a program manager's week is not judgment; it is collection and chasing. Which regression is still failing, whether the IP vendor's new date is in the schedule yet, who owns the characterisation board, what the OSAT said on Thursday. An agent that reads the engineering tools and the supplier email directly does that collection continuously, and does the chasing the hour something moves rather than at the next review.

Tymeline's AI Employees are built for exactly this. Each has a named job on the program, a scope of action, and an identity under Tymeline ID, so every action is attributable and permanent.

The decisions that stay with people

Consequential decisions are approved by a named person: the gate, the re-spin, the customer date, a change to who works on what. The agent's job is to arrive at that person with the fix already worked out, the impact quantified and the evidence attached. Kendrel, Tymeline's brain, does that work; the approver says yes or no in minutes rather than hearing about the problem in a week.

An agent that runs the program, and one that summarises it

A summarising agent reads the ticket tracker and writes a status. It is as current as the tickets, and it changes nothing. An agent that runs the program holds the date: it knows every commitment the date depends on, sees one start to move, and acts within the authority it has been given. The difference shows in a demo. Ask the vendor to move a supplier date in an email and watch what happens in the next hour.

The boundary and the record

Two things make agents acceptable to a CISO and a VP of engineering at once. An authority envelope that says what each agent may do without asking, set per program and widened only as the record shows it is safe. And a decision receipt under every action: what it read, what it chose, which policy applied and who approved. Tymeline writes both into the record, anchored and permanent.
